Here and There
Longtime employee of Soft Touch Car Wash, Mario Solorzano, died June 3 after a medical emergency occurred the week before. Customers said they were stunned when they did not see his familiar face at the register this week and instead saw a flier about his death. A donation box for funeral expenses is located at the cashier's desk, 5246 Riverside Drive, Chino.
High schoolers of today must be ready for a technical future, and with the school board's recent approval of an advanced placement (AP) physics class, Chino Valley Unified students will be prepared. One might need a dictionary to read the course contents of the new calculus-based, college-level physics class called "AP physics C: electricity and magnetism" covering electric force, how charge moves through objects, magnetic fields, and other mind-bending topics.
What is Chino Hills City Manager Benjamin Montgomery doing with a rubber chicken on a plaque? Mr. Montgomery attended Chino's council meeting on Tuesday to present the "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner" award. The idea for the award was hatched by former Chino City Manager Matt Ballantyne and Mr. Montgomery in 2017 as a way to promote friendly rivalry between the two cities in the Corporate Challenge games. Mr. Montgomery said he was walking the "hall of shame" to Chino, but couldn't resist adding, "it has been collecting dust in Chino Hills since 2019."
A lot of grumbling has been going on at council meetings in both Chino and Chino Hills about having to collect sewer treatment fees on behalf of the Inland Empire Utilities Agency. Councilmembers are stating they look like the "bad guys" when the Agency proposes rate increases that not only raise the ire of residents, but prompts costly Prop. 218 elections the cities have to fund. The sewer fees are shown on the water bills.
Speaking of the Prop. 218 election, there is a big difference between how each city collects protest ballots. In Chino Hills, the city encloses a pink envelope and a ballot where residents can check a box to vote "no." In Chino, there is no envelope nor protest form provided. Residents must submit their own written protest. The City of Chino Hills goes beyond the Prop. 218 notification requirements because of pushback it has received over the years. It was announced during the Chino City Council meeting on Tuesday that only 12 ratepayers turned in written protests for recent trash and sewer rate hikes. That compares to a few thousand in Chino Hills whenever elections are held. In fact, a Prop. 218 election is currently underway.
A NextDoor social media conversation about recent mailbox thefts in the Alterra neighborhood of Chino Hills revealed neighborly advice such as purchasing a mailbox that locks and making sure to bring in mail nightly. so it doesn't accumulate. One man offered: "I once had a problem with mice in my mailbox, so I placed a mousetrap in my mailbox. Problem solved."
